FT Charge to Rise by 30 Satang per Unit from May to August

Chairman of the Energy Regulatory Commission, Direk Lawansiri, disclosed the result of the panel's meeting on the new fuel adjustment tariff, or FT, rate for the next billing period from May to August.

He said that the FT charge should increase by 57.45 satang per unit to cover a higher electricity production cost stemming from a rise in fuel costs and the use of a large volume of fuel for power generation during the summer.

Direk further said that the regulatory panel has asked the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, or EGAT, to continue subsidizing 19.05 satang of the cost increase per unit and some will be covered by the remaining capital from investment of the state electricity utilities during 2008 and 2010.

Therefore, consumers will have to pay 30 satang per unit more for electricity.

He also called on the public to help save energy, as the country currently needs to import a greater amount of fuel from abroad for power generation.

Direk noted that the main factors the panel take into consideration when considering the new FT rate are fuel cost in the past six months, the exchange rate, the economic, social and environmental conditions, to ensure that it will have slightest effect on the public.

The public is invited to share their opinion on the issue at the website, www.erc.or.th, until May 4 before the newly-adjusted FT rate could come into effect.
