Solar Plant Kicks off
Natural Energy Development (NED) has commenced commercial operation of its eight-billion baht Lopburi Solar, the world’s largest operating thin-film silicon solar energy project.
Construction of the 55-megawatt (MW) plant started in July 2010 and was unaffected by the recent floods.
About 1,778 km of underground cable was connected and approximately 520,000 thin-film solar panels were installed.
Woramol Khamkanist, NED’s managing director, said an expansion of the project is underway, and once completed in June 2012, the Lopburi Solar power plant’s expansion plan will generate 63 MW.
Sahust Pratuknukul, chairman of NED, said the Lopburi Solar project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 1.3 million tonnes annually over its 25-year project life, as well as to cut the imported fuel by over 35,000 tonnes a year.
Lopburi Solar is owned by NED, which is equally owned by CLP Thailand renewable Limited of the CLP Group, EGCO Group and Diamond Generating Asia Limited of the Mitsubishi Corporation.
